Timing is everything, and when you get perfect timing don’t take it for granted. A couple of weeks ago after we got the snow storm, we were able to get to Natural Bridge / Red River Gorge area for some hiking. Wow was is amazing. It’s a little hard to believe that I’ve not been to this area yet. The “Red” is only about 3 hours from my house, but until this winter trip I’d never been here before. I will be going back, frequently. Cash was along for the journey, and he loves the snow, he was in his element.

On Day 1 we hiked from Whitelton Branch Camping area to Gray’s Arch along a section of the Sheltowee Trace trail. The Sheltowee Trace is a 300ish mile trail that goes from Northern Kentucky to Northern Tennessee, mostly in the Daniel Boone National Forest.
The scenery was spectacular, this area got some ice before the snow, so the trees were covered in glassy ice and then topped with snow. This created an amazing winter wonderland.

Day two was to the top of Natural Bridge to get some elevated views. It was a gorgeous day.

Hiking in the snow and ice can be challenging. We had an advantage, we picked up some micro-spikes, and they saved us many falls, and made hiking in the deep pack snow much easier.

We’ll probably never get the chance to see this area like this again, this is a once in a decade snow for them, and we hit the timing perfectly. Even if they get another snow like this in the near future it’d be rare we can get there in time to hike in it. So I’m thankful for the timing and the opportunity. It was a great couple of days of hiking.
The cheesesteak sandwich from Miguel’s was amazing, hit Miguel’s Pizza if you are ever in Red River Gorge, it’s worth it.
Thanks to Julie for planning the trip and introducing me to this wonderful area.
