The Grand Canyon is hard to comprehend. The ridges and cliffs that are far away from you loose their depth and turn sort of 2d, like they aren’t real and sort of a backdrop you might see in a stage play. But the entire field of view is stunning. It’s a long way to the bottom, and it’s a long way to the opposite side.

Tuesday it was very hot, above 90 degrees at the rim, so instead of hiking down into the canyon (it gets hotter as you descend); Julie and I did a 10 mile hike on the south rim.

We camped at Mather Campground Tuesday evening. It’s a really nice campground, but no electricity.

Wednesday some rain rolled in and we got to see the Grand Canyon and surrounding desert get some much needed rain. There have been forest fires in the area, and we woke up to the smell of smoke Wednesday morning. But we got the ultimate gift as the sun came out right before some more rain rolled in. So if you’ve stayed with me this long on this entry here is your reward.

Tomorrow I’ll post pictures from our hike down into the canyon on Bright Angel Trail.
